Spring Plant Hunting: A Weekend Adventure

As March arrives, the lingering breath of winter still embraces my Zone 8 region. However, I also sense the arrival of spring.

With this in mind, I ventured out for some plant shopping last weekend, anticipating the arrival of new arrivals at local stores. I visited one nursery in the morning and another in the afternoon. Already, a wide variety of plants were on display. I wandered the aisles of the garden centers, eagerly perusing the plants. Now, I'd like to introduce the lovely plants I purchased.

Scabiosa

I bought it thinking it was a perennial, but it seems to behave more like an annual depending on the environment. I hope it will thrive in my garden. Whenever I see its purple flowers, I can't help but be drawn to it.

Maidenhair Fern ‘Mairis’

Japanese Painted Fern ‘Pearly White’

Polystichum setiferum ‘Plumosum Densum’

I purchased these three types of ferns. Their textures are fantastic. Will their above-ground parts also wither in the winter? If I can divide them, I'd like to overwinter the divided parts in the garage to enjoy their green leaves during the winter.

Aquilegia 'Kirigami'

I bought it thinking it was a perennial, and its flowers are lovely too.

Cordyline 'Renegade'

Cordyline 'Can Can'

I purchased them with the thought that they would stay at a lower height of about 4 feet compared to other Cordyline varieties. Renegade has beautiful glossy copper-colored leaves, while Can Can boasts a stunning mix of vibrant yellow-green and red hues. Although I already have one planted in my garden, its ability to survive the winter was uncertain, so I decided to buy another when I found it at the store. These plants are indispensable in the garden, as they do such a good job.

These cordylines are labeled as suitable for zone 8, but I doubt they will survive the winter in my Zone 8 area. This winter, I plan to definitely dig them up from the garden and overwinter them in the garage.

I think these plants might be dividable. It looks like there are two separate clumps.

Ranunculus, English Daisy, Bog Rosemary, Artemisia 'Powis Castle', Veronica 'Georgia Blue', Lupinus, Nepeta 'Walker's Low', Armeria.

The following day, I also attended a home & garden show, where I found even more treasures to add to my collection.

There were so many things I wanted to buy, but I managed to narrow it down to these three…...

Pieris Japonica Katsura

Mangave

The pink flowers are too cute! I was lucky to find Mangave plants here because I've been wanting to try growing them. Plus, it comes with five pups.

Rabbit Cement Planter

This design is incredibly adorable. Just imagining a bunch of flowers blooming in this basket makes me happy. It seems like it would make a great gift too.

This weekend was a delightful time spent searching for plants. I found new additions at local shops and the Home & Garden Show, filling me with excitement and joy. I look forward to watching them grow in my garden.
